Applications of Shape Memory Materials in Orthopedics
Shape memory materials (SMAs) exhibit unique mechanical properties suitable for orthopedic and medical applications. When deformed, SMAs can sustain large strains with minimal load increase, showing pseudoelastic behavior. This property allows for constant corrective stress in orthoses, aiding in the treatment of conditions like equinovarus foot deformity.

Fretting Damage
Fretting is a mechanical condition where small amplitude movements between contacting parts cause localized damage like cracks, wear, and oxidation, reducing component lifespan. Research focuses on designing experimental devices and using microscopy and profilometry for damage characterization.

MMFs used as linear actuators
In-situ mechanical testing allows observation of samples using various microscopes while applying load, eliminating the need to disassemble them. The Division has developed a device using MMFs for these tests, enhancing range and response speed. New, more compact, and powerful prototypes are being developed.
